Softball Swept at Loyola Chicago Saturday
4/18/2026 7:08:00 PM | Softball
GW softball was defeated in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Loyola Chicago. GW fell 4-2 in game one before dropping game two, 5-4, in 10 innings. GW moved to 19-17 overall and 8-9 in A-10 games.
Standout pitcher/utility Cece Smith was exceptional in the circle for GW in game one. Smith threw three perfect innings to begin the game and was charged with only one earned run as she struck out seven in her third complete game of 2026.
Loyola Chicago scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to go up 4-0. GW loaded the bases in the sixth and shaved one run off the deficit before Ashley Corpuz led off the seventh with a solo home run. But the two runs were all GW could plate as the Ramblers secured game one, 4-2.
Corpuz and Sydney Hogue each had two of GW's six hits. Smith added a hit and run scored offensively in game one.
GW went ahead first in game two, as a four-run third inning opened the scoring, propelled by a three-run Hogue home run and a Lucy Goodwin RBI double. The Ramblers fought back with two runs in each of the fifth and seventh to send the game to extras, where they eventually won in ten innings.
Sophia Torreso made the start for GW and went 7.0 innings with three strikeouts. She was replaced by Chloe Greene in extras, who helped extend the game into the tenth with two strikeouts.
GW and Loyola Chicago return for the series finale tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN+.
