GW softball hosted George Mason Saturday at the GW Softball Field for a doubleheader which the teams split. GW won the first game on a walk-off single by first-year Sydney Hogue, before the Patriots won game two backed by solid defense and pitching.Â
Both offenses hit a groove early with runs in each of the first two innings. A two-run Patriots homer in the first and RBI fielder's choice in the second gave George Mason three early runs, but GW responded in each inning with a Kaylee Layfield RBI single in the first, followed by a Hogue two-run blast, plus a Cadence Gilliland RBI single in the second to give GW an early 4-3 lead. Hogue's homer was the first of her career.
After Layfield made it 5-3 with another RBI single in the fourth, George Mason went deep for the second time in the game, tying the score at 5-5 in the fifth.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hogue was called upon to be the hero and delivered with a single to left to clinch the 6-5 win for GW.
Sophia Torreso threw all seven innings as she improved her record to 4-1. GW's 13 hits in game one was its most in a conference game this season. Layfield led the team with three hits, followed by Paige Hayward, Hogue and Daniella Lew with two apiece.
Game two was opened by a highlight sequence from GW pitcher/utility Cece Smith. Smith escaped the first without allowing a run after George Mason had a runner in scoring position with one out. Then batting clean-up in the bottom of the first, Smith delivered an RBI single up the middle to give herself and GW a 1-0 lead.
The script flipped in the second as the Patriots scored three runs on their only two hits of the game, and went on to hold the lead the rest of the way. GW was limited to three hits after the first inning and five in total.
Smith pitched all 7.0 innings and matched her season-low for hits in a seven-plus-inning outing with two.
Senior Ashley Corpuz finished the day with two walks, tying All-American Jenna Cone's program record as she collected her 121st and 122nd career walks on Saturday.
The Revolutionaries and Patriots return to the GW Softball Field to decide the series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. Â
