Wywoda Tosses Gem, Baseball Cruises to Sweep Over Saint Peter’s
3/1/2026 3:42:00 PM | Baseball
Through 5.1 innings, Wywoda allowed just one base runner, a hit by pitch in the second inning, which he later sat down on a double play, facing the minimum through the first 13 hitters. A Saint Peter's double eventually spoiled the no-no bid in the fifth, Wywoda's lone hit allowed on the day.
GW's bats, however, were alive and well, as they have been all weekend. Charlie Walsh got the scoring started in the second, launching a solo home run to right-center. George Washington doubled its lead later in the inning via a throwing error by the Peacocks' shortstop.
Both teams were quiet until the sixth when GW put up a four-spot in the inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Charlie Rogan tallied a solo home run to open the inning, his second of the weekend and program-leading fifth of the season. Luke Maltacea brought two home on a bases-loaded single up the middle, scoring Walsh and Travis Peitz. GW's final run of the frame came off an RBI groundout from Robbie Lavey, scoring Cristino Tufano.
After Wywoda's exit, Saint Peter's wasted no time getting to GW's bullpen, using a two-run homer from Alex Manent to jump on the scoreboard. The Peacocks added another in the eighth, a double from Joey Dwyer, for their third run of the afternoon.
Walsh tallied his second RBI of the day in the home half of the seventh, ripping a double into the right-center gap to score Petiz. The next batter, Tufano, hit a ball to the exact same spot on the outfield wall, trading places with Walsh. In the eighth, Peitz notched an RBI on a fielder's choice to short, recording GW's ninth run of the afternoon.
Saint Peter's made things interesting in the ninth, tallying three runs in the ninth, but Aidan Carey shut the door on a potential comeback by getting out of a bases-loaded jam with a double play to second base.
Wywoda earned his first win of the season, moving him to 1-1 in 2026.
The Buff & Blue continues its homestand with five games at The Tuck this week, starting with a Tuesday matchup vs. UMBC at 2:30 p.m. Live coverage of the game will be carried live on ESPN+.
