WASHINGTON - The George Washington University Department of Athletics has named Matt Klampert as head coach to lead its softball program. A coach with extensive experience at the collegiate level and deep ties in the Atlantic 10 Conference, Klampert arrives at GW from Saint Joseph's, where he was the top assistant last season in the Hawks' first 30-win season since 2013.Â
"I would like to thank President Granberg and AD Michael Lipitz for this incredible opportunity," Klampert said. "The potential of GW softball to consistently compete for A-10 titles and be a player on the national stage is evident. I saw firsthand last spring at A-10 Championship the amazing environment at The Vern, and I look forward to getting to work with our team and to rally the community behind what we're going to accomplish together."
"We were drawn to Matt's vision of excellence for GW softball and to his demonstrated care for and commitment to his student-athletes," said Athletics Director Michael Lipitz. "He is highly competitive and focused on raising the expectations of everyone engaged with his program. Matt has been an integral part of outstanding softball programs throughout his career, is well prepared for this opportunity, and embraces the responsibility to develop his student-athletes in the classroom, on the field, and as outstanding university ambassadors in our local community."
Last year in Philadelphia, Klampert was part of a team that advanced to the third day of the A-10 Championship, before falling to eventual champion Saint Louis. In the process, Klampert and the Hawks knocked out GW for their 30th win of the season, only the 12th time in program history with as many wins. Along the way, St. Joe's had the A-10 Rookie of the Year for just the third time in program history and had multiple All-Atlantic 10 First Team members for the first time since 2021.
Prior to his time on Hawk Hill, Coach Klampert spent the previous season as an assistant coach at nearby Penn where he facilitated in the development of two players who earned All-Ivy League honors. He's also served a stint at another A-10 school in Fordham, where he helped the Rams to a pair of A-10 titles. A champion at nearly every stop, from 2016-18, Klampert was part of the staff at Iona, when the Gaels won the 2017 MAAC regular-season title and earned a bid to the National Invitational Softball Championship.
A 2014 graduate of St. John's with a bachelor's degree in sport management with a minor in business administration, Klampert served as a student manager with the Red Storm as an undergrad, and moved into a volunteer assistant coach role with the team for the 2014-15 season and helped St. John's capture the Big East championship.
Klampert will officially join the Foggy Bottom community on August 11.
