Michael Lipitz
- Title:
- Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics
- Email:
Michael Lipitz came to GW in August, 2024 from the University of Illinois Chicago, where he had been director of athletics since 2019.
A seasoned administrator who has demonstrated a commitment to driving results in competition, the classroom, and the community, he previously spent two decades in leadership roles in the Atlantic Coast Conference at North Carolina State University and the University of Maryland.
In his first year in Foggy Bottom, the Revolutionaries posted a 94% graduation rate, a 3.4 student-athlete GPA, captured three conference championships, and the men’s basketball program notched 20-wins and a postseason appearance for the first time in nine years.
In five years at UIC, Lipitz led the Flames to the best academic results in school history, elevated its competitive profile by securing membership in the Missouri Valley Conference, generated record levels of financial support for its student-athletes and teams, and made a meaningful impact in service to its campus and Chicagoland communities.
After capturing UIC’s first-ever Horizon League Women’s All-Sport Trophy in 2021, Lipitz guided the Flames into the Missouri Valley Conference beginning in 2022-23. Its teams made an immediate competitive impact, including the women's basketball program that earned consecutive postseason appearances for the first time in school history in 2023 and 2024.
Revenue generation is another hallmark of Lipitz’s career, as UIC secured the largest-ever gift to women’s athletics for its softball program, set records during GivingTuesday for donor participation and dollars raised, and achieved one of the largest scholarship endowments in program history. The athletics department also relaunched its annual giving program to incentivize current year gifts and better reward donors, and created a kids club for the school’s youngest fans.
On the facilities front, UIC opened Chicago’s premier collegiate soccer venue in fall 2022 with a $5 million renovation of Flames Field. The Flames Athletic Center basketball practice facility and locker rooms were renovated, and a new softball clubhouse debuted in spring 2024.
Prior to his time in Chicago, Lipitz enjoyed nearly nine years at NC State. As deputy athletics director, he helped lead the daily operations of an athletics department with 550 student-athletes, 23 sports and 250 employees. He oversaw personnel and legal matters for athletics, as well as capital projects, facilities and operations, championships and special events, while supervising NC State football, women’s basketball and multiple Olympic sports programs. He led numerous strategic initiatives for the Wolfpack, including the $35 million renovation of historic Reynolds Coliseum, the construction of a $14 million football indoor practice facility, and the creation of the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame.
As a member of Maryland’s senior management team, he spent 11 years in progressive leadership roles with responsibilities that included the oversight of Maryland’s marketing, licensing, ticket sales and video units, while managing relationships with the department's corporate partnership sales team, football fundraising organization, and letterwinner organization, the M Club. He also negotiated and managed athletics contracts, including the school’s inaugural all-sport Under Armour apparel deal, corporate partnerships, concessions, merchandising, and personnel agreements. He also supervised several sports programs and helped hire and retain many of the Terps’ most successful head coaches.
He also previously served as Chief Operating Officer of the Orange Bowl Committee, the not-for-profit organization that produces the annual Orange Bowl football classic and related bowl week festivities, as well as community and youth sports initiatives throughout the year in South Florida.
Lipitz has held numerous leadership roles at the conference and national levels, including serving on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Competition Committee, as one of 10 athletic directors nationally on the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee, and as chair of the Missouri Valley Conference Council of Athletic Directors.
Lipitz holds a law degree from Villanova University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland, where he captained the tennis team. He was recognized with the Geary F. Eppley Award as the graduating male student-athlete with the highest grade point average.
Michael and his wife, Kerry, met and were married in D.C. and are the proud parents of two sons, Henry (13) and Charlie (10), and a dog, River.
