Junior gymnast Delaney DeHaan was nominated and selected to attend the NCAA's Inaugural Legacy Lab held earlier this month in Indianapolis. DeHaan was joined by sophomore and junior student-athletes from across the country for a weekend of brainstorming and building a toolbox for turning an athletic career into innovative entrepreneurship.
DeHaan chose between three learning tracks - Brand in Motion, Blueprint to Breakthrough and Built to Serve - to concentrate on service, because she identifies, "the greatest leaders are those who serve others first."Â
Moreover, she stated her hope that her "impact will ultimately be measured by the lives uplifted, not just the success that is built."
Prior to attending the Legacy Lab, DeHaan organized and led a virtual presentation for GW's nearly 400 student-athletes focused on the foundations of strategic NIL within collegiate athletics. Drawing on years of personal experience, research, and trial-and-error navigating the NIL landscape, she created a practical guide designed specifically for GW student-athletes.
The session focused on real applications for current students, including tips, platforms that help athletes land their first partnerships, strategies for responsible brand-building, and common pitfalls to avoid.Â
DeHaan also shared email templates she has personally used to connect with brands and secure partnerships. The session was co-hosted with track's Ashley Robinson, and together they aimed to make NIL opportunities accessible and actionable for all George Washington Revolutionaries.Â
"The Legacy Lab gave me a completely new perspective on what is possible," she reflected. "Hearing from founders, lawyers, CEOs, sports agents, professors, and even a fellow former collegiate gymnast challenged the way I think about leadership and impact. I left with a renewed motivation to fully embrace the rare opportunity I have as a Division-I student-athlete at GW to build something meaningful, create opportunities for others, and create a legacy that extends beyond sport."
