ORLANDO, Fla. -Â GW golf opened up the Atlantic 10 Championship on Tuesday, posting a 6-over 294 to place sixth through 18 holes of the competition at the Grand Cypress Course at Evermore Resort.
Rodrigo Barahona and Manuel Barbachano, in search of back-to-back individual top-10 finishes after both did so a year ago, fired dueling 1-under 71s on Tuesday to sit in a tie for fifth. Richmond's Carson Baez leads the individual competition at 4-under after an opening 68.
Barahona carded four birdies as well as an eagle on the par-5 second hole against three bogeys and a double bogey in his round. Barbachano started his day with the first of three birdies, which were ultimately countered by a pair of bogeys. Philippe Thorin is tied for 15th after bouncing back from an opening double to shoot an even-par 72 thanks, in part, to an eagle on the par-5 13th.
Leo Xu and Adam Bencik each shot an 8-over 80 to tie for 53rd.
GW is nine shots off the pace of first-place Davidson, who posted a 3-under 285 to take the round one lead, one shot ahead of Rhode Island (286), with Dayton (288), Richmond (289) and VCU (290) not far behind.
The Buff & Blue will be back on the course on Wednesday morning for the second round with tee times scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.
