BRONX, N.Y. - GW men's basketball wrapped up the regular season on Wednesday night in emphatic fashion, dispatching Fordham on the road, 81-58, to reach the 20-win threshold in the regular season for the first time in nine years.
With a first-round bye locked up in next week's A-10 Championship at Capital One Arena in D.C., opportunities await to add to the first 20-win season since 2016-17. The win moved GW to 9-9 in league play, marking the second time in three years with a .500 or better finish against A-10 foes for GW.
GW's fifth road win of the season was never in doubt as the Buff & Blue led wire-to-wire following a Sean Hansen layup on the opening possession. The Revolutionaries swarmed the host Rams in the first half, limiting Fordham to 27% shooting while connecting on 56% of their own to build a 42-23 lead, the largest halftime lead for the program since leading South Carolina by 20 on Nov. 30, 2022.
The advantage never dropped below 17 in the second half as the GW Revs rolled to their largest A-10 road win since a 24-point win in the same building on Dec. 30, 2020.
Rafael Castro capped off his bid for first team All-Conference honors with another strong showing, scoring 16 points with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in just 25 minutes.
Trey Autry (14 points, 7-7 FT), Hansen (10 points, four assists) and Darren Buchanan Jr. (10 points, 5-6 FG) gave GW four in double figures as 10 different Revolutionaries found the scoresheet.
Now, GW will play the waiting game as it has a bye from the last Saturday of the regular season. The Revolutionaries will be seeded seventh or eighth and will open play in next Thursday's second round at either 11:30 a.m. or 5 p.m. depending on the remaining A-10 results. The full bracket will be released following the conclusion of play Saturday night.
