OCCOQUAN, Va. - GW rowing opened up its spring season in successful fashion, defending its titles in the George's Cup and Class of 1998 Cup by besting local rivals Georgetown and George Mason on Sunday morning.
The Buff & Blue cruised to a victory in the Varsity 8 with a time of 7:03.5, more than 14 seconds better than second-place Georgetown. The win gave GW the Class of 1998 Cup, contested annually between the George Washington and Georgetown V8, for the third-straight year and for the 12th time in 21 matchups.
The Revolutionaries finished in second to Georgetown in the 2V8 and V4, creating a tie in the overall points standings, but the Buff & Blue retained the George's Cup by virtue of its victory in the top boat. GW has now won nine of the 14 George's Cups.
Races were also contested in the 3V8 and 2V4 with GW placing second behind Georgetown and comfortably ahead of George Mason in each race.
GW will return to action on Saturday for a double duel with Colgate and Boston University in Ithaca, N.Y., hosted by Cornell.
