Men’s Basketball Bows Out in A-10 Quarters, 80-65

WASHINGTON - The first half of Friday evening's final fight in a trilogy of battles between George Washington and George Mason proved to be everything that fans of both local schools could ask for, with the teams trading shot after shot and keeping pace with each other after the two previous meetings between the combatants this season were both decided by a single possession. It was the GW Revs on Friday who held the advantage at the break with a four-point edge at intermission, 42-38, and 20 minutes to decide the seat in Saturday's semis. George Mason, however, answered the second half bell.
A 30-11 start to the second for the Patriots erased the Revolutionaries halftime edge, and gave ample breathing room for the 2-seed to withstand any late punches from GW. After the Buff & Blue scorched the nets to the tune of .625 shooting in the opening 20 minutes, including a stellar 7-of-11 (.636) show from long range, the GM defense clamped down hard in the second half, slashing GW's numbers to .231 from floor and .167 from three-point range in the closing twenty.
Three Revolutionaries made their way into double figures, All-Conference performers Rafael Castro (17) and Christian Jones (11), along with grad student Gerald Drumgoole Jr. with 10, but George Mason's All-Conference players were too much to overcome with First Team big man Jalen Haynes bullying his way to 24, and defensive ace Jared Billups coming up with five steals without missing a shot.
At 21-12 on the season, George Washington will learn Sunday if any more postseason basketball is in store in 2025.
