LAS VEGAS - Returning to the postseason for the first time in eight years, GW men's basketball took to the stage under the bright lights of the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Monday, facing one of the first four teams out of the NCAA Tournament in Boise State.
For 25 minutes, GW held its own, hanging within a possession with 15 minutes left, but the Broncos showed their might down the stretch, running away with a 89-59 win.
Boise State took what was a 43-40 game following a Ty Bevins 3-pointer with 15:04 left and blew things open with a 17-4 run over the next four minutes to put the game away.
GW committed a season-high 22 turnovers and saw the Broncos gain significant advantages in points off turnovers, 27-5, and fast break points, 18-0.
Despite the setback, the opportunity showed a glimpse into the future with Trey Autry, Rafael Castro and Ty Bevins all reaching double digits. Autry paced GW with 16 points while Castro tallied his 19th consecutive double-digit scoring effort to close the season with 11 and five rebounds. Bevins tallied a career-high 11 points behind a trio of 3s.
GW completes the season with 21 victories, its most in nine years, and the 16th 20-win season in program history. The Buff & Blue reached the A-10 quarterfinals for the first time in eight years and qualified for the postseason for the 20th time ever.
