Softball Outlasts UNCG in Weekend Finale, 2-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The George Washington University softball team got back in the win column on Sunday, defeating the tournament host UNCG by a final of 2-1. The Revolutionaries finish the weekend at 2-2, and are now 7-3 on the season.

Cece Smith was in the circle for GW all game and had an excellent performance, striking out nine batters on the afternoon. Both she and UNCG starting pitcher Salem Ward kept unblemished starts going through four innings, before the visitors finally broke into the scoring in the fifth.

It was Cadence Gilliland for GW that delivered the game-changing at-bat for GW in the fifth, a sac fly with two runners aboard that scored two. Madi Mays and Allison Heffley were the runners that came around to score for GW, with the help of a UNCG throwing error.

UNCG didn't go down quietly, and were on the verge of tying or taking the lead in the last of the seventh. The Spartans cut the lead in half after scoring a runner from third on a single to right, before loading the bases with two outs. In the most important at-bat of the afternoon, Smith held strong, forcing a grounder to Kaylee Layfield at second base who stepped on second to secure the game.

GW was outhit 8-6 in the contest, but had timely at-bats when it mattered most. Smith took the win; her third of the season.

Next for GW is a trip to College Station, Texas, where the Revolutionaries will have a four-game stay at the Texas A&M Invitational. GW begins with two games on Friday; the first against Idaho State at 3:00 p.m.
