2/21/2025 1:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball hosts its penultimate home game of the season on Saturday night at the Smith Center as Massachusetts comes calling for the final scheduled meeting as A-10 foes. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+ and Monumental Sports Network.
HOMECOMING WEEKEND
HOMECOMING WEEKEND
Saturday represents GW's annual Homecoming Celebration as well as George's Birthday Bash, celebrating George Washington's 293rd birthday. A pregame tailgate with a free food truck will be held at G Street Park from 4-5:30 p.m. as part of the annual GW Palooza.
CASTRO APPROACHING RECORD TERRITORY
With his 11th double-double on Wednesday, Rafael Castro is now tied for 13th all-time at GW for most double-doubles in a single season since the statistic was made available in 1969-70. Nine of the top 10 single-season rebounding marks were set prior to available records.
GW's all-time record for double-doubles in a season is Mike Brown with 21 in 1983-84 during his All-American campaign. Castro will tie Tyler Cavanaugh (2016-17) and Mike Battle (1970-71) for 11th all-time with his next double-double. At his current pace, Castro would finish among the all-time top 20 in single-season rebounding at GW.
HISTORY VS. MASSACHUSETTS
One of GW's most common all-time rivals, the Revolutionaries and Minutemen square off for the 80th time on Saturday and for the final scheduled time as Atlantic 10 members. As a result of UMass' move to the MAC next year, GW will be the last remaining charter member from the A-10's founding in 1976.
GW owns a 46-33 edge in the all-time series and has won 10 of the last 14 meetings between the programs, but has lost three straight, including a 74-61 setback last month in Amherst. Rafael Castro led GW in the setback with 23 points and seven rebounds while Rahsool Diggins and Jaylen Curry had 19 each for UMass.
Last year's home loss snapped a four-game home winning streak against the Minutemen as the Buff & Blue are 23-10 all-time at home against UMass.
A LOOK AT THE MINUTEMEN
It should come as no surprise that the Revolutionaries and Minutemen have had eerily similar A-10 campaigns with identical 6-8 conference records. Each team is 3-4 on the road and at home, although UMass has hit a swoon recently with three-straight losses to Davidson, St. Bonaventure and VCU.
Rahsool Diggins, who has averaged 19.0 ppg in three meetings against GW, is the team's top threat with 16.9 ppg. He's improved his play to 21.6 ppg against conference competition, second-best in the league. Jaylen Curry adds 12.8 ppg, but has missed the last two games due to injury. Daniel Rivera provides a third double-digit option with 11.9 ppg.
The Minutemen play the fastest tempo in the A-10 (70.9 possessions per game, 28th NCAA), but have struggled offensively in league, ranking 12th in efficiency and 14th in effective field goal percentage.
