Softball Welcomes Coppin State for Home Opener Tuesday

WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team looks to continue its hot start to the 2025 season as it opens up play at the GW Softball Field against Coppin State on Tuesday. First pitch for the Revolutionaries and Eagles is set for 2:00 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
EARLIEST HOME START IN PROGRAM HISTORY
Feb. 18 marks the earliest date that the Revolutionaries have ever played their home opener. The Buff & Blue will open play at the GW Softball Field two calendar days earlier than they ever have before. GW's previous earliest game at home was last season, when the Buff & Blue split games of a doubleheader vs. Canisius on Feb. 20.
CORPUZ & REED SPRINT OUT OF THE GATE
GW junior outfielder Ashley Corpuz and graduate pitcher Anna Reed each had sensational opening weekends, leading to recognitions by both the A-10 and NFCA. On Monday, Corpuz and Reed claimed two of the A-10's three weekly awards, being named the conference's Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after the Revolutionaries' first five games. On Tuesday, the pair was noted by the NFCA as being among the top performers nationally on opening weekend.
LEADING CONFERENCE RANKS
Through one weekend, GW has multiple individuals leading conference rankings. After her impressive opening weekend, Corpuz leads the A-10 in OBP (.650), RBI (8), RBI per game (1.60), SLG (1.071) and total bases (15), while Corpuz and Allison Heffley are tied for the conference best batting average (.500). In the circle, Reed is out front early, leading the conference in victories (3) and innings pitched (18.0), and she is tied at the top with Loyola Chicago's Andie Broniewicz in starts (3).
As a team, GW leads the conference in home runs (3) and home runs per game (0.60), SLG (.426), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.30) and sac bunts (6). Â
ABOUT COPPIN STATE
The Eagles come to the GW Softball Field on Tuesday after an 0-3 start to the season this past weekend, falling to Jackson State (7-4), Southern (7-5) and Florida A&M (14-3) at the HBCU Invitational. Coppin State's full 2025 season stats can be found here.
Coppin State was 23-22 a season ago, which included a pair of defeats to the Revolutionaries and a trip to the MEAC Championship series, where it eventually lost to Morgan State, two games to none. Coppin State is coached by Mercedes Hargett in her second year at the helm of the program. She will look to improve CSU's all-time record vs. GW, which is currently 2-12.
