Softball Thrashes Coppin State, Wins Home Opener in 6 Innings

Cece Smith throws two-hitter as Revolutionaries own the base paths
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team opened up play at the GW Softball Field in 2025 with an 8-0, six-inning run-rule win over Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Revolutionaries moved to 5-1 on the season and improved to 13-2 all-time over Coppin State.Â
Cece Smith threw an excellent six innings against the Eagles and picked up her second win of the season. The Atlanta native allowed just three Coppin State baserunners on two hits and one walk throughout the afternoon, while punching out three Eagles in the process.
It took GW a few innings to warm up offensively on a chilly afternoon, but once they did, there was no looking back. GW plated runs in every inning from the third onwards and did so with 10 hits, seven walks, just one strikeout and RBI from five different players.
Kaylee Layfield did the most damage for the Buff & Blue, going 3-3 at the plate with three RBI. Paige Hayward was also perfect at the plate on the afternoon, reaching twice on walks before doubling home the game-winning run in the sixth.
Up next for the Buff & Blue is a trip to North Carolina, where they will play five games at the UNCG Invitational. First up this weekend is a date with Tennessee Tech on Friday at 5:30 p.m., which will air live on FLOSPORTS.
