Softball Lights Up Iona in 13-2 Run-Rule Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The George Washington University softball team moved to 6-1 on the year on Thursday after a 13-2 drumming of Iona in the first game of the UNCG Invitational.Â
The top of the order was the story of the day for GW on offense as Kaylee Layfield, Allison Heffley and Ashley Corpuz, batting in that order, each had standout performances. Collectively, they went 7-8 at the plate and were responsible for 11 of GW's 13 RBI.
GW was ignited in the second inning as Layfield broke the ice with a two-run single, then Corpuz crushed her second grand slam of the season to blow the game open. GW kept its foot on the gas and scored once more in the second on a Paige Hayward RBI double, before Corpuz added her fifth and sixth RBI when she again stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered with a single to center.
Iona got its two runs in the third inning, which was the only time they were able to get to GW starting pitcher Anna Reed. Reed struck out eight batters in 3.0 innings, and is now averaging well over one strikeout per inning this season. Chloe Greene was inserted on the rubber in the fourth inning and kept the Gails quiet the rest of the way, but the win went to Reed who is now 4-0 on the season.
GW led 9-2 but added onto it in the fourth when the Revolutionaries loaded the bases once again. Carolyn Skotz was hit by a pitch and brought in the first run, before Layfield collected her second and third RBI on a single up the middle, and Heffley tallied her two RBI on a single down the right-field line.Â
GW kept the line moving all game, leading Iona 12-5 in hits. GW is +20 in hits and +29 in runs scored vs. opponents this season.
The Revolutionaries will lace back up for the second and third games of their stay at the UNCG Invitational tomorrow. GW will first go against Tennessee Tech at 10:30 a.m., before facing Towson at 3:00 p.m.
