Corpuz, Reed Picked for A-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week

WASHINGTON - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced on Monday that GW softball's Ashley Corpuz and Anna Reed have been selected as the conference's Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, following a dominant opening weekend at the Blue Hose Invite.Â
Corpuz, a junior from Ladera Ranch, Calif., was integral in GW's success over the weekend. Batting in the three-hole and playing left field all weekend for GW, Corpuz wrapped opening weekend with a gaudy 1.721 OPS. She was 7-14 at the plate (.500 avg.) with six runs scored, eight RBI, two doubles, two home runs, two walks, two hit-by-pitches and two steals. The veteran made her biggest splash of the weekend in GW's second game vs. Morehead State, where in back-to-back innings she hit home runs - the first a solo home run to tie the game, and the second a go-ahead, game-winning grand slam. Corpuz was also perfect in the field, converting on all 18 putouts and adding one assist.
Reed, playing in her first season as a Revolutionary after transferring from Harvard, made three appearances on the mound for the Buff & Blue and excelled in each outing. She closed opening weekend with a 0.78 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and an unblemished 3-0 record. The graduate student struck out 19 batters while only walking one and allowed just two earned runs over 18.0 innings of work. Reed's highlight performances came in the matchup vs. Presbyterian and in the weekend finale against Northern Kentucky. Against Presbyterian, she struck out nine batters in just five innings, and against NKU, she pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits over seven innings.Â
Reed, Corpuz and the rest of the Revolutionaries have returned to the DMV ahead of this weekend's home opener at the GW Softball Field. The Buff & Blue are hosting Holy Cross on Saturday for a doubleheader (12:00 p.m.), before finishing the series with a solo game on Sunday (12:00 p.m.).
