SILVER SPRING, Md. – Ave Tucker '77, a GW baseball alumnus and Board of Trustees member, will be inducted into the John F. Kennedy High School athletics hall of fame in March, the school announced. Tucker, a Silver Spring, Md. native, is the first baseball player to receive the prestigious honor.
Tucker, a member of GW's baseball team from 1975-77, still has the deepest of connections to the university and his outpouring of support has impacted the campus and its students for many years, nearly a half-century since his own time as a GW student. His father, the late Simon Tucker '53, studied law at GW, and he also has connections to the university through his wife's family as well. During Tucker's time as a student-athlete, the baseball team used the National Mall Ellipse as its home field. The grassy lawn lacked dugouts, fences and bathrooms, and games would often be paused so the president's helicopter could land.
"I had just taken the job at GW when I met Ave and saw him play for the first time," said former GW Head Coach Mike Toomey. "Back in that time, we played without a fence, so Ave's speed in the outfield was perfect for us to get the ball in quickly. From the time he stepped on campus, Ave has been a consummate teammate and team player in everything he gets involved in. He was an absolute pleasure to coach, and I have nothing but respect for all he's been able to accomplish in his life. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this honor."
Over the next four decades after departing GW as a student-athlete, Tucker built a successful career as the CEO and co-founder of TM Financial Forensics, LLC, a litigation consulting company. However, Tucker hasn't forgotten about his GW roots, showing an outpouring of support for both the university and the baseball program. Tucker has served on the GW Board of Trustees for over a decade, founded numerous scholarships for the School of Business and GW Law, as well as gifting the baseball program a donation to build a new clubhouse which has been in use for over 10 seasons. In response to his generous efforts, GW's baseball field at Barcroft Park was renamed "Tucker Field" in the fall of 2014.
"GW has been a very important part of my life ever since my wife and I were born at the GW Hospital," Tucker said. "GW has given priceless opportunities to my father, my in-laws, and me! I'm honored to be connected with and support such a great institution."
GW baseball congratulates Tucker on this terrific honor and thanks him for his continued support of the program, GW athletics and the university.
