Men's Basketball Outlasts South Florida, 99-95

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - A high-intensity, top-100 matchup was promised on Saturday afternoon at the Mohegan Sun Arena and both George Washington and South Florida delivered and then some. But when the clock hit zero, it was the Buff & Blue escaping with a 99-95 triumph in the Amica Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off.
GW rode a 10-1 burst in the final two minutes of the opening stanza to take a 44-40 lead at halftime. The momentum continued early in the second half as the lead swelled to as many as 12.
USF showed its might by racing back to tie the game on a pair of occasions, but each time GW had an answer with treys from Tre Dinkins and Trey Autry. Dinkins, the Duquesne transfer, put in the proverbial dagger with back-to-back threes, giving GW an 89-81 lead with just over three minutes left.
The Bulls got back within one on a pair of occasions, but never had possession with a chance to take the lead as GW made 8-of-10 at the charity stripe to finish off the game.
Dinkins led five GW Revs in double figures with 22 points off the bench on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting (4-of 7 3s). Autry, who was named Game MVP, scored 16 points with seven boards while playing 37 minutes. Rafael Castro, in just 21 minutes due to foul trouble, scored 14 points with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Bubu Benjamin and Tyrone Marshall added 13 apiece.
GW shot 55% from the floor and paraded to the free throw line to the tune of 30-of-41 on the day. USF's Josh Omojafo led all scorers with 33 points (9-14 FG, 12-14 FT).
GW will be back at home Wednesday to begin a three-game homestand when it welcomes American for a 7 p.m. tip. Prior to the game, GW will host the annual free Athletics Block Party, presented by Northwest Federal Credit Union, on 22nd Street from 5:30 p.m.
