GW men's basketball is back on the road Wednesday to take on Massachusetts, trekking to Amherst, Mass. for the final time as an A-10 opponent. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
DEFENSE TRAVELS
The GW Revs are currently fifth in the A-10, and 85th nationally, limiting foes to 68.1 ppg, a far cry from last year when they yielded 77.3 ppg to rank 14th in the A-10 and 310th in the NCAA. GW is 41st in the country in field goal defense (40.2%) and 21st nationally in 3-point defense (29.0%), both top three in the A-10.
GW has held its opponent to fewer than 70 points 11 times this year after doing so just 17 times combined in the first two years under Coach Caputo. The Buff & Blue are now 105th in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency metric, its highest ranking since 2015-16, and a 159-spot improvement from last year's team that finished 264th.
A PERFECT TREY
Sophomore Trey Autry scored 15 points on Saturday at George Mason, his fourth-straight game in double figures, and the sixth time in the last seven games he has scored at least 10 points. Over those seven games, he is averaging 10.6 ppg on 54% FG (26-48) and 41% 3s (11-27).
Autry has reached double digits 11 times this season and seen marked increases in his shooting percentage, connecting on 50% of field goals (42% last year) and 42% from beyond the arc (34% last year).
HISTORY VS. MASSACHUSETTS
One of GW's most common all-time rivals, the Revolutionaries and Minutemen square off for the 79th time on Wednesday. GW owns a 46-32 edge in the all-time series and has won 10 of the last 13 meetings between the programs, but lost both ends of a home-and-home last year.
The Buff & Blue are 18-16 all-time in Amherst, the second-best record against any current A-10 foe on the road. GW had won six-straight trips to the Mullins Center prior to the 81-67 setback a year ago.
The two teams are scheduled to meet at the Smith Center for the final time as Atlantic 10 competitors in exactly one month, Feb. 22. As a result of UMass' move to the MAC next year, GW will be the last remaining charter member from the A-10's founding in 1976.
A LOOK AT THE MINUTEMEN
Frank Martin's team sits at 3-3 in Atlantic 10 play following a pair of wins last week that included a 120-118 triple-overtime marathon at Fordham and an 82-60 blasting of La Salle on Sunday. Both teams share a home win over Dayton and losses to Richmond and George Mason in the first three weeks of conference play.
Rahsool Diggins, who averaged 19.0 ppg in the team's two meetings last year, once again leads UMass in scoring at 16.1 ppg. Jaylen Curry and Daniel Rivera each chip in 12.6 ppg for a Minutemen team that plays the fastest tempo in the A-10 (71.7 possessions per game, 18th NCAA).
UMass leads the league with 39.9 rebounds per game, 13.7 offensive boards per contest and 6.1 blocks per game and gets to the line 25.1 times per game, 14th-most nationally. However, the Minutemen are 14th in the A-10 in scoring defense (76.4 ppg), last in 3-point percentage (27.7%), 14th in field goal percentage (42.0%) and commit 19.6 fouls per game, the most in the league.
