Volleyball drops A-10 opener to Duquesne, 3-1

Pittsburgh, Pa.-Â After a tight battle and with a claim over the second stanza on Friday evening, the GW volleyball team fell to Duquesne in four sets, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25.Â

BY THE NUMBERS
Leading the Revolutionaries were sophomore Haylee Brown, junior Cianna Tejada and senior MC Daubendiek, who each registered 10 kills over the course of the evening. First-year Taylor Treahy chipped in two service aces, while on defense, Tejada and junior Sydney Stewart each contributed two blocks at the net.Â

For the Dukes, graduate Elizabeth Drelling led the offense, tallying 11 kills, while Carsyn Henschen and Avery Hobson each put up nine.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED

In the first, Duquesne opened the set with a lead, but GW worked to narrow the gap. With offensive efficiency from GW, the set was tied at 18 apiece. With a substantial back-and-forth in the final moments of the set, the Dukes claimed the momentum and the set, 25-22 over GW.Â

In the second, a kill from Salem Yohannes and a service ace from Treahy brought the Revolutionaries out to an early lead. Duquesne immediately responded to GW's offensive success, but the Revolutionaries never surrendered their lead, claiming the second, 25-21.Â

In set three, play opened once again off a service ace from Treahy. GW held onto their momentum, but the Dukes responded, tying the stanza at 11 and ultimately claiming a lead over the Revolutionaries. With five lead changes and 13 tied scores in the third, Duquesne claimed the set, 25-23.Â

Playing to four, GW took the lead early once again, but Duquesne once again evened the score, 9-9. The Dukes gained momentum and pushed ahead of the Revolutionaries to forge a narrow lead. GW did not give up the fight, and following another tight set with seven tied scores, Duquesne claimed the match in four.Â

GW will return to action in Pittsburgh tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. to conclude the series with Duquesne. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
