
Volleyball Sweeps Day Two of Delaware State Tournament in Final Non-Conference Matchups

Dover, Del.- With two thrilling 3-0 victories, the GW volleyball team closed out their non-conference slate at the Delaware State Tournament. With the wins, the GW Revs move to 10-3 in 2024 as they now turn their attention to Atlantic 10 play.
MATCH 1:
George Washington 3, Delaware State 0
Match one proved to be a dominant execution for the Buff & Blue, despite three narrow set victories over the Hornets. All three sets were a thrilling back-and-forth affair, with GW claiming each set by a margin of four or less (27-25, 25-21, 25-22). Of note, the match featured 22 tie scores, the most occurring in the second stanza at 10. Despite 14 lead changes across the match, the Hornets were not able to claim a set victory, leading to another 3-0 victory in favor of the Revolutionaries.
Leading the charge in the first match was senior outside hitter Salem Yohannes, who earned 13 kills for GDUB. Additionally, Cianna Tejada and Haylee Brown both swung over .400 in the first matchup. On defense, Reilly Heinrich led the way with 14 digs and four Revolutionaries chipped in at least one block at the net. Across the net, Delaware State was paced by Gerren Tomlin and Valeria Otero who challenged GW with 11 kills apiece.
MATCH 2:
George Washington 3, Harvard 0
In the second, the Harvard Crimson proved to be another fierce opponent, but their efforts were thwarted by the Revolutionaries in another thrilling victory, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16. Much like the first match of the day, the opening stanzas were a toss-up between the two teams. In the first, GW came back from a deficit to find its advantage late in the set to secure a 25-21 victory. The second frame featured 12 tied scores and six lead reversals, but GDUB was able to narrowly claim victory, 25-23. In the third, GW claimed the lead swiftly, and with only one lead change, paced the set to win, 25-16.
Leading the charge against the Crimson, five GW Revs swung above .400 with Yohannes once again fueling the GW offense with 13 kills. The Revolutionaries out-killed the Crimson, 44-36, with Dilara Elmacıoğlu and Grace Allread feeding the attack. Leading the way for Harvard was Corrine Fuery, tallying 10 kills, and Ryleigh Patterson followed closely behind at 9.
Following six days off, GW will open A-10 play next Friday, September 27 as it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on Duquesne. Friday's matchup is slotted for 6 p.m. and will be aired live on ESPN+.
