Cano Garners First Team All-Conference, Seven Softball Student-Athletes Earn Postseason Awards

GW places one on first team, two on second team and four on rookie team
WASHINGTON - The Atlantic 10 released its softball postseason awards on Tuesday and named seven different Revolutionaries to All-Conference teams. Rose Cano was selected as First Team All-Conference as a utility, while Alexa Williams and Allison Heffley were named Second Team All-Conference for outfield and catcher, respectively. Paige Hayward, Mandy Lauth, Cece Smith and Sophia Torreso were selected to the All-Rookie Team. Williams was also selected to the All-Academic team. It is the highest number of individuals recognized from GW on the four lists since the 2021 A-10 regular season and tournament championship team.
Cano was named to the All-Conference First Team as a utility after another standout season of pitching, batting and fielding for the Buff & Blue. A sophomore out of Long Beach, Calif., Cano hit at an impressive .337 mark in 86 at-bats with seven doubles, 16 RBI and eight runs scored. Cano also pitched 72.0 innings in her sophomore season, finishing with a 4.18 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and five wins. When not in the circle, Cano was often featured at second base and she finished the season with 20 putouts, 38 assists and a .935 fielding percentage. Cano adds on to her collection of awards which already includes NFCA All-Region Second Team as a pitcher/utility and A-10 All-Rookie Team in 2023.
The Revolutionaries placed two student-athletes on the All-Conference Second Team, Heffley at catcher and Williams in the outfield. Heffley, a graduate transfer from Harvard, started every game for the Buff & Blue in 2024 and led the team and conference with 58 hits. Heffley finished the regular season ranking sixth in the A-10 with 13 doubles and 35 RBI. Behind the plate, the Lemoore, Calif., product collected 236 putouts, 24 assists and seven runners caught stealing without allowing a single passed ball. Heffley adds the A-10 Second Team All-Conference honor to her collection of awards, which already includes NFCA All-Region First Team Catcher in 2023 and Ivy League Honorable Mentions in 2022 and 2023.
Williams was named to the All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Team in 2024 after a comeback year which featured a team-best 37 RBI. Williams completed her senior season with a .313 avg., bringing her career average to .345 - good for eighth best in program history. The senior from El Capitan, Calif., hit a career single-season high 13 doubles in 2024, which tied for most on the team and sixth most in the conference. Williams collected 41 putouts and added one assist with a .955 fielding percentage in right field. It's the second A-10 Second Team All-Conference award for Williams (2022), who adds the accolade to a collection which also includes A-10 Player of the Year, A-10 First Team All-Conference and NFCA All-Region Second Team in 2022, and A-10 All-Rookie Team and NFCA All-Region Third Team in 2021.
The Buff & Blue had four first-years named to the All-Rookie Team in Hayward, Lauth, Smith and Torreso. Smith and Torreso earned their way to the All-Rookie Team by leading the Buff & Blue in the circle 2024. Smith finished the year with a 2.59 ERA, best on GW and sixth-best in the A-10, in 121.2 innings pitched while leading GW with 12 wins. Smith, who hails from Atlanta, had 109 strikeouts to just 43 walks in her first season with the Revolutionaries.
Torreso was named to the All-Rookie Team after finishing the year with a 4.33 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. The rookie from Bristol, Conn., was GW's most used pitcher in 2024 and had 10 wins in her first season, striking out 81 batters to 60 walks in 139.0 innings pitched. Â
Hayward earned her way to the All-Rookie Team after playing all 53 games for GW with standout defense in center field. Hayward recorded 177 putouts with three assists and just two errors for a .984 fielding percentage. The Torrance, Calif., product also wielded a dangerous bat with a .303 avg. and 31 RBI - 10 most in the A-10.Â
Lauth was named to the All-Rookie Team after impressing offensively in her first season. Lauth finished the season with a .432 on-base percentage after drawing a GW rookie-record 38 walks, which was second most in the conference. The Avon, Ind., native finished second among GW rookies with 23 RBI. Lauth stayed busy in the infield in 2024, playing a combination of first, second and third base and finished with 203 putouts, 33 assists and a .963 fielding percentage.Â
