WASHINGTON – The George Washington men's and women's track teams are set for the 2024 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Va. The two-day event will begin at 11:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
GW will compete in 20 events over the weekend with 22 student-athletes seeing action in at least one race. Included in GW's 20 events are 11 trial races that will take place on Saturday. Groups of 8-12 depending on the size of the event will advance to the finals on Sunday. Events with no trials include the men's 3K steeplechase, men's 10K, women's 4x100m relay, men's and women's 5K and the men's and women's 4x800m relay. GW will compete in each of those events for a chance at the conference crown and all-conference honors.
GW will be well-rested going into the championships after last competing on April 19 at the Virginia Challenge and April 20 at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational. During the team's time in Charlottesville, the Buff & Blue snapped two school records en route to a great showing amongst the nation's top runners. Grad student Rachel Horowitz started things off for GW with a time of 56.17 in the 400m, narrowly breaking her own record time of 57.76 set at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational earlier this season. Along with Horowitz, Sarah Mitchell also etched her name into the record books with a time of 16:42.57 in the 5K. Mitchell's time broke the previous benchmark by nearly five seconds, a 16:47.30 set by Miranda DiBiaso in 2017.
While in Baltimore at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational, GW broke four more school records for a total of six in a two-day span. Kamryn Holness, who previously set both hurdle records earlier this season, topped her previous times with a 15.72 in the 100m hurdles and a 1:08.38 in the 400m hurdles. Along with Holness, Horowitz also got in on the action again by breaking the program record in the 100m. Horowitz tallied a mark of 12.16, eclipsing the old time of 12.89 set by Emma Benzinger in 2023. GW's final record of the weekend came in the women's 4x100m relay with a time of 49.77.
This weekend, GW looks to continue a string of seven-straight years with at least one men's or women's runner to earn all-conference accolades. The streak dates back to 2016 and does not include 2020 due to the championships being canceled. 2022 was GW's most successful conference championship in recent years, with three men's and three women's all-conference runners. Ryan Fowkes is GW's lone returning all-conference honoree, receiving the award for his performances in the 1,500m in 2022 and 2023.
Live results for the championship meet are available on GWsports.com. A link to purchase tickets for both days can be found here. All ticket orders must be purchased in advance of the event, no same-day tickets or walk-up tickets will be available. The tournament homepage can be found here.
