Baseball Topples UMass, Completes Pivotal A-10 Sweep

After both teams went scoreless through the first two innings, GW lit the scoreboard up with eight runs in the third to take a commanding lead. The big inning was started by Ellis Schwartz who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run of the game. One batter later, Tim Nicholson launched a deep two RBI single to the left center wall to make GW's lead 3-0. The GW Revs weren't done there as Nick Mullen tallied an RBI off a single to left center and Sam Gates brought two home courtesy of a double down the left field line. With Gates at second, Steve DiTomaso stepped to the plate and put an exclamation point on the inning, rocketing a home run over the left center fence to make GW's advantage 8-0.
Despite the large deficit, UMass chipped away in the fourth by scoring five runs of its own. GW was unfazed by the Minutemen offense, quickly putting up two more tallies in the bottom of the inning. Nicholson collected his third RBI of the day via a triple to deep center field, while McGwire Tuffy gave the Revolutionaries their 10th run off an RBI single through the left side.
In what quickly became a back-and-forth contest, UMass equaled GW's two runs with two of its own in the fifth. With the score at 10-7, GW battled back with two more runs in the sixth to make it 12-7. The first of the two runs came once again off the bat of Tuffy as he hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Schwartz from third base. Later in the inning, DiTomaso made more GW history with an RBI single to center field. The base hit was significant as it gave DiTomaso his 290th career hit, tying him with Mike Bassett for second on the program's all-time leaderboard.
UMass once again had an answer for GW, tallying two more runs in the seventh to make the score 12-9. GW wouldn't let the Minutemen spoil the final game at Tucker Field in 2024, scoring three more runs in the seventh to put the game away for good. All three of GW's runs in the inning came off a double from Mullen down the left field line, putting the score to its eventual final mark of 15-9. Mullen ended his day with a stellar four RBI to go along with his three hits and one run scored.
On the mound, GW used six different pitchers in the contest including Benny Wilson, who picked up his second win of the season after also earning the victory yesterday. Jarrett Korson earned the start for the Buff & Blue and tossed 3.2 innings, striking out five batters. As a team, GW hit .414 over the weekend against UMass, piling up 48 hits across the three games.
Along with Mullen, Nicholson also had a stellar day from the plate with four hits and three RBI. He scored three runs for GW as well. Young notched three hits and one run scored, while DiTomaso finished with a multi-hit day and three RBI. Gates, Tuffy, Schwartz, Robby Wacker and Robbie Lavey each added one hit apiece as well. All nine of GW's starters tallied at least one hit in today's game, the second time GW has done that this series after recording a season-high 22 hits in Friday's series-opener.
Prior to the contest, Head Coach Gregg Ritchie was presented the game ball from his 300th career victory earlier this weekend. Today's win was Ritchie's 301st, the most by a head coach in program history.
GW concludes the 2024 regular season next week at Saint Joseph's. The three-game series begins on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and extends into Friday and Saturday. Both of those contests are slated for 1:00 p.m. Follow GWsports.com for updates on live stats and streaming options. The Hawks will take an 11-10 conference record into the series, a game behind the GW Revs in the A-10 standings.
