FAIRFAX, Va. – Despite a strong offensive showing, the George Washington baseball team couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 13-10 in Sunday's series finale with George Mason. The loss drops GW to 19-12 overall and 4-2 in A-10 play.
GW fell into an early 6-0 hole after the Patriots recorded one run in the first and erupted for five runs in the second. Reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week Graham Jeffries started on the mound for GW, but was unable to escape the second frame, tossing just 1.1 innings during his outing. Following Jeffries' exit, Andrew Cutler took over for the Revolutionaries and guided the team to a scoreless third inning. In the fourth, GW got the bats going, plating four runs to get George Mason's lead down to 6-4. The Buff & Blue's first two runs came off an RBI single to left field from Nick Mullen. Scoring on the play was Robby Wacker and Charlie Rogan. One batter later, Sam Gates ripped a double into right center, scoring two more for the Revolutionaries. McGwire Tuffy and Mullen scored on the Gates double.
After neither team scored in the fifth, GW tied the score in the sixth off another double from Gates. Mullen and Tuffy both scored once again on the play, knotting the tally at 6-6. Two batters later, the Revolutionaries captured their first lead of the game when Robbie Lavey homered to right center field. The two-run bomb was Lavey's second this season. The homer capped GW's scoring run of eight unanswered after falling behind 6-0. Despite the momentum, GW's lead wouldn't last long. In the home half of the inning, George Mason plated three runs to recapture a 9-8 lead.
After the Patriots added three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, the Buff & blue entered the ninth needing five runs to extend the game. GW got two of them when Jude Clough ripped a single up the middle scoring Gates and Tuffy. Unfortunately, GW's hot bats couldn't muster any more runs, falling by a final score of 13-10. The loss drops the series for GW, the first series loss the team has suffered since March 8-10 against Canisius. GW had since won three-straight series, including two sweeps.
Shaun O'Keefe picked up the win for George Mason on the mound, while Brandon Siegenthaler was tagged with the loss. Siegenthaler moves to 1-1 on the year, while Logan Rumberg picked up his first save of the year for the Patriots. GW's offense was led by Gates, who finished 3-for-6 on the day with four RBI and two runs scored. Tuffy and Lavey both had multi-hit games as well, tallying two apiece. Lavey finished with two RBI and a run scored, while Tuffy scored three runs for the GW Revs.
The Buff & Blue return to Tucker Field on Tuesday for a mid-week clash with Coppin State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
