Baseball Defeated by Rhode Island to Even Series

The Buff & Blue got on the scoreboard first, registering one run off a sacrifice fly from Brett Young. After the Rams scored three in the second, GW tied the game with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. GW's first run came via a double from Robby Wacker down the left field line. Rhode Island's left fielder bobbled the ball when picking it up on the fence, allowing Ellis Schwartz to advance home on the error. Later in the inning, Nick Mullen tallied an RBI groundout to short, scoring Wacker from third base.
The game wouldn't stay tied for long as Rhode Island launched a solo home run in the third to recapture the lead. As they had done all game, GW had an answer for the Rhody offense, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead of their own. GW's lead would hold until the fifth inning when Rhode Island capitalized on another solo home run to tie the game up one again.
The outing would stay in a tie until the eighth inning when Rhode Island's offense exploded for five runs in the frame. GW got a run back in the bottom of the eighth off a solo home run from McGwire Tuffy, but it wasn't enough to dig themselves out of the late hole. The solo blast was Tuffy's first of the season and his first in the Buff & Blue as a graduate transfer. The Rams eventually tacked on four more in the ninth, sealing the 14-6 victory.
GW's offense was led by Schwartz who finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run. DiTomaso also tallied three hits and an RBI, while Tuffy finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. GW's pitching staff saw eight different pitchers see action in the game. Graham Jeffries earned the start, tossing two innings and allowing four earned runs. Tyler Blankenship was charged with the loss, his third of the season.
GW returns to Tucker Field tomorrow for the series rubber match with Rhode Island. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
