Corpuz completes near-perfect day, GW pitchers have their way in doubleheader victories
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team seized both games of Tuesday's doubleheader vs. George Mason. The Revolutionaries beat the Patriots, 10-2, in a five-inning run rule victory in game one, before needing extras in game two but getting the job done on a Cadence Gilliland walk-off double that gave the Revolutionaries a 2-1 win. GW improves to 22-20 overall, 8-9 in the A-10 and 15-9 at home.Â
GAME 1 (GW 10, GMU 2)
2-2 with two home runs, 6 RBI, 3 runs scored and two walks was the line for Ashley Corpuz as she helped lift GDUB over George Mason, 10-2, in five innings.
Corpuz drew a walk with the bases loaded in the first inning to score GW's first run, and drew a walk with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to score GW's game-clinching 10th run. In between, all she did was hit two no-doubt home runs - the first a three-run shot and the second a solo home run - to make her responsible for six of GW's eight RBI.Â
The Revolutionaries showed a patient approach from the outset, drawing six walks in the first inning and sending 10 batters to the plate in a four-run opening frame. Mason got runs back in each the second and third inning, but with Corpuz's three-run home run in between, it was 7-2 GW after three.
Corpuz's second home run came in the fourth inning to make it 8-2. GW made it 9-2 as Maggie Greco was quick to react and score on a wild pitch, before Corpuz ended the ballgame moments later on her second run-scoring walk of the game.Â
Sophia Torreso got the win as she allowed just two runs on five hits, striking out three and walking three. Mason had runners aboard in each of the five innings, but Torreso managed them well allowing just two of the eight to score.
The Revolutionaries collected 10 hits and walked nine times in 4.1 innings of offense, while only striking out once.
GAME 2 (GW 2, GMU 1)
An eighth inning was required in game two to separate a 1-1 deadlock, which set up Gilliland to come through with her first career game winning hit as she smacked a double down the left field line and scored Paige Hayward from second to seal the sweep over the Patriots.
After a scoreless first two innings, Alexa Williams drove in the first run of the game with a double that found the gap in right field and scored Reese Torres from first. It was Williams' team leading 29th RBI of the season as she put GW up 1-0. George Mason went on to score the only other run in regulation, which came unearned in the sixth by way of a GW fielding error.
In the eighth, after Torreso made quick work of GMU in the top of the frame, Hayward got aboard on a single and advanced to second after Mandy Lauth was hit by a pitch. Gilliland came up next and seized the moment, threading a double fair of the left field line and scoring Hayward with time to spare.
Cece Smith made the start and allowed just three hits over six innings. Smith's only run allowed was unearned, and she struck out five while allowing zero free passes. Torreso pitched the final 2.0 and got the win, fanning three and walking none on just two hits.
Corpuz reached base on three walks in game two. Her popout in the eighth was the only time she was retired in either game, as she finished the doubleheader with an .875 OBP and 2.667 SLG.
