KINGSTON, R.I. - The George Washington University softball team fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Rhode Island. The Revolutionaries dropped both games by a finale of 5-2 as they fell to 22-22 overall and 8-11 in the A-10.
GAME 1 (GW 2, URI 5)
GW fell into an early deficit in game one and wasn't able to recover as Rhode Island earned a 5-2 victory in the series opener.
The Rams opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single and added two more runs in both the third and fifth innings.
A 3-for-4 game from DP Alena Ramirez and an Allison Heffley two-RBI single were the highlights on offense for GW. Heffley's RBI single came as the Revolutionaries were looking for a comeback in the seventh, but it was all GW could manage in the rally attempt.
Reese Torres had GW's lone extra-base hit, as the Revolutionaries equalled the Rams' hit total at eight hits apiece, but left 10 runners on base.
Sophia Torreso made the start for GW and gave up four runs over 4.1 innings. Natalie Cox made her second appearance of the season in relief of Torreso and gave up one run (unearned) in 1.2 innings.Â
GAME 2 (GW 2, URI 5)
GW was unable to climb out of a three-run first inning deficit as Rhode Island completed the Saturday sweep in game two, 5-2.
A Rams' RBI double followed by a two-run home run in the first inning did the early damage in the second matchup. In the third inning, Heffley cut the lead to one as she drove out her second home run of the season, a two run shot, to cut the lead to 3-2 and make her responsible for all four GW RBI on the afternoon.
The Rams were able to recoup the runs from Heffley's home run quickly as they scored twice in the bottom of the third to go back up three. GW loaded the bases in the fifth and got two aboard in the sixth, but wasn't able to convert on either opportunity.
Torreso made the start and was relieved by Cox in the fourth. Cox threw 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, but kept GW close and the Rams off the board.
R. Torres finished 2-3 and was the only Revolutionary to record multiple hits in game two.
