KINGSTON, R.I. - The George Washington University softball team used a pair of first-inning scores on Sunday to defeat Rhode Island in the series finale, 3-1. GW improves to 23-22 overall and 9-11 in the A-10.

The Revolutionaries needed just three batters on Sunday to get on the board. GW's leadoff batter Maggie Greco jumped on the first pitch of the game and singled up the middle, and she advanced to second after Allison Heffley reached via error in the next at-bat. They both went on to score - Greco on an Ashley Corpuz single to right and Heffley on an Alena Ramierz RBI groundout - to make it 2-0 after half of an inning.

The Rams cut away at GW's lead on an Emily Power single in the 2nd, but that was all they could manage off GW's starter, Sophia Torreso. Torreso pitched all seven innings and allowed just one run while striking out three and walking one. Torreso only allowed six hits in her sixth win of the season.

GW got insurance in the fifth inning by way of a Paige Hayward single to third base that scored Greco for the second time in the game; her team-high 34th run of the season. The top of the Revolutionaries' lineup - Greco through Hayward - all finished with one hit apiece.

The Buff & Blue return to Washington, D.C. for a Wednesday afternoon matchup vs. Morgan State. First pitch at the GW Softball Field is set for 3 p.m., and the game will be carried on ESPN+.
