Revolutionaries knock off MEAC leaders at home on Wednesday
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team improved to 16-9 at home on Wednesday in its 9-2 victory over Morgan State. GW used ten hits and three Bears' errors to score nine runs, and was backed by another quality start in the circle from Sophia Torreso, to move to 24-22 overall ahead of this weekend's crucial series vs. UMass.Â
GW held a 2-0 lead through three innings thanks to first inning RBI from Allison Heffley and Paige Hayward, and a hitless first three frames thrown by Torreso. The Revolutionaries' lead vanished in the fourth inning as Morgan State strung together three hits and a walk to score twice and reset the game at 2-2. GW was able to get out of the half inning tied as Heffley threw out two runners from behind the plate - one stealing and one back-picked at first - stopping the Bears' momentum in its tracks.
GDUB then used three hits and took advantage of a Bears' fielding error to score three times and retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Mandy Lauth scored the first run as Alena Ramirez reached on an error by the shortstop. Sidney Torres and Gabby Polsky later scored on a two-out Cadence Gilliland single up the middle to make it 5-2 Buff & Blue.
The offense gave Torreso even more breathing room in the fifth and sixth. Ashley Corpuz scored the lone run of the fifth on a Hayward single. GW then loaded the bases in the sixth, scoring on Corpuz and Lauth walks before Polsky sent in the final run on an RBI groundout to first.
Greco finished with a game-high three hits and also scored twice. Hayward and Gilliland each finished with two hits and two RBI. Gilliland also scored one run. Torreso gave up five hits and two runs in the circle, striking out four and walking two in her seventh win of the year.
GW now prepares for its final home A-10 series of the season as UMass visits for a doubleheader on Saturday (12 p.m. & 2 p.m.) and single game on Sunday (12 p.m., ESPN+). The Buff & Blue will host both Alumni Day and Little League Day at the GW Softball Field on Saturday, before celebrating its graduating student-athletes with Senior Day on Sunday.Â
