Softball wins A-10 weekly award in fourth straight week
WASHINGTON - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced on Tuesday that GW Softball sophomore pitcher/utility Rose Cano was selected as the A-10 Pitcher of the Week following her two standout performances in the circle at Dayton.
Cano made just one start and only appeared in the circle twice this past week but had a huge impact for the Revolutionaries. In all, Cano's week featured 10.2 IP with a 2.62 ERA, seven strikeouts and just three walks. Cano allowed four runs, all earned, each coming in the third inning vs. Dayton in game three on Sunday.
Cano's first appearance came as she was sent into game two vs. Dayton to shut down a dramatic Flyers' comeback attempt. The Flyers had already scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 8-8 and had the game-winning run in scoring position with just one out when Cano was sent in. Cano struck out her first batter and forced a flyout on the next to put an end to the run and get GW into extras, where she was locked in for three innings, not allowing a single hit as GW eventually found the winner in the 10th. Cano was then selected as GW's starter in the rubber match and limited Dayton to four runs as she led the Revolutionaries to their second-straight A-10 series win.Â
Also worth noting that in the last five games at the plate, Cano registered a .385 AVG with a 1.192 OPS, one home run, one double and four runs scored.
It is the fourth straight week that GW has earned an A-10 weekly award and fifth time total this season.
Cano and the Revolutionaries are back at the GW Softball Field on Friday (doubleheader) and Saturday for a three-game set vs. Saint Louis. First pitch both days is set for 12 p.m., and Friday's action will be carried on ESPN+.Â
