CLINTON, S.C. – The George Washington baseball team completed its second series sweep of the season with a dominating 11-1 win on Sunday afternoon. Symbolic of the entire series, the Revolutionaries enjoyed stellar pitching from their starter, seeing Graham Jeffries throw six hitless innings of baseball. As a team, GW only allowed three hits on the day.
GW got the scoring started in the first inning off an RBI single from Brett Young. Scoring on the play was Steve DiTomaso who finished 2-for-5 from the plate. The Buff & Blue added to its lead in the second inning with two more runs. The first came via a sacrifice fly from Robbie Lavey, while the second came off Young's second RBI single of the day. McGwire Tuffy scored on Lavey's sacrifice fly, while Sam Gates registered the run off Young's second base knock.
Neither team registered any offense the next four innings, as GW's defense, headlined by Jeffries, sat down eight straight batters from the second to the fourth inning. Jeffries faced 22 total batters in his six innings, retiring 18 of them. Three batters reached via walk, while the other base runner reached on a hit by pitch. The dominant effort earned Jeffries his second win of the season, moving him to 2-0.
Following Jeffries' exit at the end of the sixth inning, the GW Revs piled onto its lead with five runs in the top of the seventh inning. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Robby Wacker, his first home run of the 2024 season. Scoring on Wacker's four-RBI bomb were Ellis Schwartz, who ended his day going 4-for-5 from the plate with two runs, as well as Josh Wenz and Young. The Revolutionaries weren't finished in the inning and picked up another run off an RBI groundout from DiTomaso to make the game 8-0.
Cade Davis then took to the mound for GW out of the bullpen. Davis allowed the first hit of the day for Presbyterian but got out of the seventh unscathed to keep the shutout alive. GW tallied its final three runs of the game in the eighth inning, all coming off a three-run homer from Gates. Later in the inning, Shugy Klein took the hill for GW, working a hitless inning to give GDUB an 11-0 lead into the ninth inning.
Presbyterian finally broke through offensively in the ninth, scoring its first run of the game off Max Haug. Despite the blemish, Haug quickly shutdown any hopes of a comeback, closing the 11-1 win and the series sweep. The sweep is GW's second of the season, with the first coming from March 1-3 against UAlbany. In three games against Presbyterian this weekend, the Revolutionaries allowed just four runs on eight total hits. All three Buff & Blue starters tossed at least six innings with none giving up more than two hits each.
The Revolutionaries return to Tucker Field on Tuesday to host Delaware. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., with live stats available on GWsports.com.
