WASHINGTON -Â GW men's basketball was well represented on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team, announced by the league on Tuesday. James Bishop IV was named to the All-Conference Third Team, Babatunde Akingbola earned recognition on the All-Defensive squad and Darren Buchanan Jr. was tabbed to the All-Rookie team.
Bishop earns a postseason All-Conference honor for the third-straight season, becoming the first GW player to do so since Chris Monroe in 2001-2003. The third team honor mirrors his recognition in 2021-22, sandwiched around a first team selection last season.
The senior guard is third in the league in scoring at 18.3 ppg, his fourth-straight year finishing among the league's top three in points per game. He also averaged 4.4 assists per game to finish fourth in the A-10. He was the only player in the league to rank among the top five in both categories.
Akingbola is GW's first All-Defensive team honoree since Yuta Watanabe in 2018. The graduate center has been an imposing presence at the rim this year, leading the A-10 and ranking sixth nationally with 83 blocks. He is one shy of tying Yinka Dare's program record for blocks in a season (84) set in 1993-94.
Buchanan was one of the top players in the A-10 this season, let alone rookies as he finished eighth in the league with 15.7 ppg and seventh with 6.6 rpg. Buchanan was even better in conference games, averaging 17.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg, ranking fifth and sixth, respectively, among all players.
The D.C. frosh won the A-10 Rookie of the Week award a league-high four times, paced all league rookies in scoring and became the first A-10 freshman to average 15.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg since UMass' Tre Mitchell in 2020.
GW will open the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament on Tuesday afternoon, taking on No. 10 seed La Salle at 2 p.m. Coverage from the Barclays Center will be available on ESPN+.
