Men's Basketball Travels to Saint Joseph's Wednesday

WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball makes the first of two trips to Philadelphia in the next 11 days as it squares off with Saint Joseph's inside Hagan Arena on Wednesday. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

GW started three freshmen in Saturday's game vs. Richmond, marking the first time three rookies have started for the Buff & Blue since March 7, 2020 (Jamison Battle, Jameer Nelson Jr., Chase Paar). The Buff & Blue have accrued 50 starts from first-years so far this year, far and away the most in the league (St. Joe's is in second at 31). GW is also the only school in the league to have started four different freshmen at some point this season. The Buff & Blue rank third nationally in points scored by freshmen and fourth in minutes played by first-years.
The group has produced with 50% of GW's offense coming from first-years, and rookies having played 49.6% of the team's minutes. GW has received 44 double-digit performances from four different freshmen this season - Darren Buchanan Jr. (20), Garrett Johnson (16), Jacoi Hutchinson (5) and Trey Autry (3).
COMING IN TO HIS OWN
First-year Jacoi Hutchinson has started three of the last four games and is coming off his best game of the year Saturday when he scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting (3-of-3 3s). Hutchinson has notched three double-digit efforts in the last seven games and has scored at least seven points in six of the seven contests, averaging 9.3 ppg during the stretch.
The Laurel, Md., native has been GW's top 3-point option during A-10 play, shooting 40.6% from beyond the arc, highlighted by making three triples in both games against Richmond. Defensively, Hutchinson has notched multiple steals four times in A-10 play, highlighted by a career-best five steals vs. URI on Feb. 6.
A LOOK AT THE HAWKS
Saint Joseph's has had an up-and-down season, entering play at 6-7 in A-10 competition, having dropped consecutive contests at Loyola Chicago and Duquesne. The Hawks started 0-3 in league play, then won five of six, but have since dropped three of their last four games.
SJU features a balanced attack with five players averaging double figures, led by Erik Reynolds II at 16.4 ppg. Reynolds had a career-high 34 points in last year's A-10 Tournament matchup. Reynolds leads the A-10 with 3.04 made triples per game and is second in the league at 39.1% among qualifiers.
The Hawks have lived and died by the three, topping in the A-10 in percentage of points coming from beyond the arc (37.3%), but also giving up the highest percentage of points from 3-point land (37.8%).
