Volleyball Powers Past Rhode Island

Kingston, R.I. – In a quick three sets, the GW volleyball team blew past the Rhode Island Rams in the Saturday matinee to split the A-10 series. With the win, GW moves to 9-7 in conference play with just one week left of regular season action.
BY THE NUMBERS
As a team, the Buff & Blue swung an impressive .366 over the course of the match, with Cianna Tejada, MC Daubendiek and Haylee Brown each powering down 10 kills. Starting at setter, Dilara Elmacıoğlu contributed to the offensive success with 19 assists, while on defense, Tejada chipped in six blocks to challenge the Rhode Island attack.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first, Rhode Island began the frame with the momentum, but George Washington rattled off five-straight points to claim a lead. Rhode Island battled back, but GDUB was able to seize the opening frame, 25-21. The first was also GW's most efficient, with the team posting a .529 hitting percentage.
The opening portion of the second went back-and-forth, but GW used its offensive power to build a substantial lead over the home team. Late in the set, Rhode Island made several attempts to regain its early match momentum, but the Buff & Blue took the set at 25-20.
The Revolutionaries opened the third with a quick 4-0 lead over the Rams. Rhody would fight back to tie things at eight apiece, and the remainder of the match was a tightly contested affair. Of the six lead changes over the course of the match, four of them were featured in the third. Despite the tight frame, GW was able to push ahead to claim the match sweep at 25-20.
After splitting the series with Rhody, the GW Revs will now prepare for the final A-10 series of the 2024 campaign, playing host to Loyola Chicago next Friday and Saturday in the Smith Center. The series will begin Friday with a 6 p.m. matchup with the Ramblers.
