WASHINGTON -Â GW men's basketball opened Atlantic 10 play by sweeping the league's weekly awards for the second time this season. Following their standout performances this week, James Bishop IV and Darren Buchanan Jr. were named the league's Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Bishop catapulted GW to its first conference victory of the season on Saturday at VCU via his game-winning dagger with 1.7 seconds remaining. Overall, Bishop averaged an eye-popping 30.0 ppg in the two contests on 52.9% shooting (18/34), 54.5% 3-point accuracy (8/14) and an 81.8% showing at the free-throw line (18/22). He also added 5.0 rpg, 4.5 apg, 1.5 bpg and 1.0 spg.
The game-winner Saturday finished off a 28-point showing at VCU, 23 of which came after halftime. On Wednesday, Bishop matched his season high with 32 points vs. Fordham, playing 51 minutes in the contest while adding six assists, five rebounds and a career-high three blocks.
For the fourth-straight year, Bishop is in the top two of the A-10 in scoring at 18.5 ppg. He also ranks third in the league with 4.7 apg. He is one of just five players nationally with those averages this year.
Buchanan burst onto the scene in his A-10 debut with 38 points vs. Fordham, a new career-high and the most for a freshman in the NCAA this season. He was a remarkable 15-of-30 for the floor in scoring the most points for a GW first-year since SirValiant Brown's 42 points back in 1999.
The D.C. native finished the week averaging 23.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 3.0 spg while shooting 47.4% from the floor (18/38) and 71.4% from the free-throw line (10/14). While scoring nine points on Saturday at VCU, Buchanan was instrumental in limiting one of the Rams' top threats, Sean Bairstow, to 2-of-13 shooting in GW's two-point win.
Buchanan is up to 14.7 ppg in his debut campaign, the top rookie scorer in the A-10, the top rookie forward scorer nationally and the ninth-best first-year scorer overall in the NCAA. He also ranks third overall in the A-10 in field goal percentage at 56.4%.
Bishop, Buchanan and the cardiac Revolutionaries are off until Saturday when they host Davidson as part of a two-game-in-three day stretch at the Smith Center this weekend. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. vs. the Wildcats with coverage regionally on Monumental Sports Network. Tickets are available at gwsports.com/tickets.Â
