WASHINGTON - The 59th season of GW men's soccer gets underway this week as the new-look Revolutionaries travel to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion on Thursday. Kickoff from the ODU Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m., and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
SUCCESS IN THE PRESEASON
GW is coming off a successful preseason, which featured 270 minutes of shutout soccer for the Revolutionaries. GW began the preseason with a pair of 0-0 draws at home vs. William & Mary and Saint Joseph's, before downing Mary Washington, 1-0, on the road in the final exhibition on Sunday.
BACK FOR MORE
GW returns 11 student-athletes from the 2022 roster: Duncan Wegner, Richard Raupp, Sean Vaghedi, Lucas Matuszewski, Jared DeMott, Roee Tenne, Alex Nicholson, Tim Neumann, Conor Stephens, Demi Amigun and Carter Humm. The group brings a wealth of experience on every level of the field and includes five participants from last season's A-10 quarterfinal match. Matuszewski, Tenne and Humm will have elevated roles in 2023, having been named captains for the upcoming campaign.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
GW reloaded its roster in 2023 with the addition of 17 student-athletes. The group of seven international student-athletes and 10 student-athletes from around the United States will don the Buff and Blue officially for the first time on Thursday evening.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Old Dominion is coming off a season in which it finished 6-8-2, including a 3-4-1 record in the Sun Belt Conference. The Monarchs return 13 student-athletes from last season, including their second-, third- and fourth-highest point scorers from 2022: Jonas Schmalbach (4 goals, 3 assists), Louis Beckett (2 goals, 3 assists) and Michael Eberle (3 goals, 1 assist), respectively.
GW is 1-4-0 all-time against the Monarchs, but the two sides have not met since the 1998 season.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following Thursday's season opener, the Revolutionaries will look ahead to two matches next week. First, GW will travel to Riverdale, N.Y., for a 1 p.m. match against Manhattan College on Monday, Aug. 28. Then on Saturday, Sept. 2, GW will play its first of nine scheduled matches on the GW Soccer Field when Iona visits for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
