WASHINGTON – Head Coach Matt Watts and the GW men's soccer program have announced the addition of Richard Ainscough to the staff as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026 season. Ainscough brings over six seasons of college soccer coaching experience to Foggy Bottom, with a proven ability to develop and recruit at a high level.
"Richard stood out during the interview process because of his growth mindset, his enthusiasm for recruiting, and the preparation he showed in understanding our program," said Watts. "He recognizes the opportunities and strengths that make GW a special place, while also bringing thoughtful ideas on how we can continue to elevate the program. I look forward to welcoming Rick, working alongside him."
Ainscough comes to GW after spending three seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA D II Regis University in Denver, where he played a key role in the program's most successful stretch in a decade. During the 2024 season, Regis recorded an undefeated conference run and its best conference finish in over 10 seasons. In 2025, Regis improved again with a 9-6-4 record and a conference semifinal appearance. With Ainscough's assistance, Regis was ranked nationally for the first time in 10 years.
Prior to Ainscough's time at Regis, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, NCAA D II Eckerd College. In a short time, Ainscough helped take Eckerd from 2-12-1 to above .500, achieving Eckerd's best season in seven years. Prior to Eckerd, Ainscough spent two seasons at NCAA DII Rollins College, where he oversaw recruiting and contributed to a top 25 nationally ranked program.
"I'm both honored and excited to join the George Washington men's soccer program and contribute to a culture built on excellence, growth and competitiveness both on and off the field," said Ainscough.
Ainscough played his first season of college soccer at the University of Buffalo, making 12 starts for the Bulls before transferring to Eckerd for the remainder of his college career. He accumulated 30 points in 36 career starts at Eckerd, where he served as team captain twice and earned team MVP twice.
Ainscough then turned pro, returning to Europe to play in 5 different countries.
Following his professional career, Ainscough served as a sports recruiting consultant for a top soccer consultancy agency in the UK. There, he operated as the head of operations for U.S. college athlete placements, guiding and placing over 200 athletes into their next playing environment.
