WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team is set to commence its 2023 campaign this week with a pair of home non-conference matchups. The season gets underway on Thursday when the Revolutionaries host Delaware State at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. GW's home opening match is slated for a 3 p.m. opening kick. Following the clash with the Hornets, GW will travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell Sunday. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Both games are available for streaming on ESPN+.
The Returners:
This season, George Washington welcomes back 19 letterwinners from last year's team. Headlining the returners is sophomore Aoi Kataoka who was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team following a breakout first-year season. GW will also rely on veteran leadership from seniors Lauren Prentice and Margaret Rabbitt to help guide the team's talented class of newcomers. Last season, Prentice appeared in all 18 games for GW and tallied seven points, while Rabbitt tallied six points in her 17 games played.
The Newcomers:
The Revolutionaries will look to nine newcomers to make an immediate impact on the team this season. The incoming class is headlined by one graduate transfer, Emma Lillback, who arrives in the DMV after spending the past four years at Barry University. When reflecting on the incoming class, GW head coach Michelle Demko stated, "these new Revolutionaries will help make our environment highly competitive so we can continue to push the performance side of things while consistently calling each other up to the standard."
About Delaware State:
The Hornets enter this season looking to build off a 2022 campaign that saw them finish 2-14-2. Delaware State is led by senior Mackenzie Burns who tallied a team-high seven points last season. The Hornets also return their starting goalkeeper in Ashley Maribo. The senior tallied 143 saves in net for the Hornets in 16 games played, while also boasting a save percentage of .769. GW is 8-0 all-time against Delaware State, including a 3-0 win over the Hornets last year.
About Bucknell:
The Bison enter 2023 riding high after being selected as the preseason favorites to win the Patriot League. Bucknell has claimed back-to-back Patriot League championships and will be led by senior Jenna Hall and junior Teresa Deda. Hall, the 2023 Patriot League Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, enters her senior season after posting nine solo shutouts and two shared shutouts a year ago. Hall finished 2022 with a 0.64 goals-against average, breaking the Bucknell single-season record.
Deda, the 2023 Patriot League Preseason Midfielder of the Year, begins her junior season after being dubbed First Team All-Conference each of the past two years. Deda will look to build off a 2022 campaign that saw her tally a league-high eight assists. She currently sits third all-time in Bucknell history with 20 career assists.
