WASHINGTON -Â GW women's rowing, fresh off its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship, is set to take part in the NCAA Championship this weekend on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY:Â While GW will be appearing as a team for the first time at NCAAs, this weekend is not the first time a Buff & Blue boat will compete in the national championship. The 1998 Varsity Eight crew qualified for the championship, which has been honored yearly with the Class of 1998 Cup contested annually with Georgetown.
The Buff & Blue took back the Class of 1998 Cup earlier this season with its victory over Georgetown. Members of the 1998 crew also commemorated the 20th anniversary of their appearance with a purchase of a new boat for the program in 2018.
ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONS: GW broke through at the A-10 Championship on May 12, winning the gold medal in the Varisty 8 and Second Varsity 8 to top defending champion Rhode Island by three points. As was the case in the two previous seasons, the championship came down to the V8 race, but this time the Buff & Blue blew the Rams out of the water by nearly 13 seconds to claim the crown.
Marci Robles, who was named the CRCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2021, was tabbed as the A-10 Coach of the Year for guiding the Buff & Blue to the Championship. Ezi Emenike, Naomi Lee and Alexa Nealy were named First Team All-Conference, and Anna Golbus earned a place on the Second Team.
SCHEDULE/FORMAT: GW is seeded 21st in the Varisty 8, 19th in the Second Varsity 8 and 22nd in the Varsity 4 for this weekend's championship, which is comprised of 11 automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large selections.
Friday will feature four heats for each of the boats. The top three finishers in each heat advance to the A/B semifinals while the remainder head to C/D semifinals on Saturday. The process then repeats in the semifinals with the top three in each heat going to the upper final and the remainder to the lower final.
The four finals, ranging from Grand Final (places 1-6) to Class D Final (places 17-22) will take place on Sunday morning.
