Buff & Blue welcome Rams for crucial A-10 series
WASHINGTON - GW baseball is back at The Tuck for a conference clash with VCU this weekend. The series gets going at 3 p.m. on Friday with an 11:30 a.m. first pitch on Saturday and noon start on Sunday. Friday's game will air on ESPN+ while ESPN3 has the coverage on Saturday.
INSIDE THE A-10 STANDINGS: Through three weekends, the A-10 is as crowded as ever with six teams within a game of one another for the final four spots in the seven-team conference tournament next month. GW sits in a 3-way tie for the final spot at 4-5 with George Mason and Saint Joseph's. VCU enters the weekend in a three-way tie for fourth at 5-4 alongside Richmond and Dayton, two teams the Colonials dropped two of three to earlier in the season.
Saint Louis (8-1), Davidson (7-2) and Rhode Island (6-3) sit in the first three spots with five weekends to go.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Christopher Kahler was named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week on Monday following his complete-game victory at Fordham on Sunday. Kahler has now tossed a pair of CGs this year, one of just 15 pitchers in the nation to do so. The junior righthander is fourth in the league in ERA at 3.89 and fifth with 52 strikeouts and a 1.14 WHIP. He is scheduled to throw on Sunday following Logan Koester and Teddy Brennan in GW's rotation.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS: VCU is 19-18 on the year and 5-4 in league play following a series win over George Mason last weekend. The Rams are seventh in the league in ERA (7.22) , but second in scoring with 8.1 runs per game.
The catalyst offensively has been Brandon Eike, who tops the A-10 with 16 doubles and 49 RBI while ranking second in total bases (95) and hits (56). AJ Mathis leads the league and is third nationally with 51 runs scored.
VCU holds a 27-18 edge in the all-time series and swept GW in Richmond last season. The Buff & Blue took three of four from the Rams in their last visit to Barcroft Park in 2021.
