Buff & Blue turn attention to critical A-10 series vs. VCU
The story of the day, unfortunately for GW, was the free passes issued. Nine Buff & Blue pitchers combined to walk 14 batters and hit three more, giving Maryland ample opportunities that the Terps ultimately took advantage of.
UMD came into the day 15th in the country in home runs and showcased their power with three more on Tuesday. Matt Shaw put Maryland ahead for good with a three-run shot in the fourth to make it 5-4. Two innings later, Eddie Hacopian launched a three-run blast to make it 9-4. Bobby Zmarzlak then hit a grand slam as part of a six-run seventh inning to blow things open for the visitors.
GW's offense scratched across a run in each of the first four frames against starter Nate Haberthier. Noah Levin, Bryan Belo, Robby Wacker and Sam Gates each picked up RBI's in the first frame.
The Buff & Blue was quieted by a trio of Terps before breaking through in the ninth inning when Belo crushed a three-run shot to center to cap off his four RBI day. Eddie Micheletti added an RBI single to cap off a 2-for-5 day, his fifth straight game with multiple hits.
GW is back in action this weekend at the Tuck for a critical A-10 series against rival VCU, who sits just one game ahead of the Colonials in the conference standings. The series gets going on Friday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
