Buff and Blue open six-game homestand with a doubleheader against Coppin State
WASHINGTON - GW softball returns to the GW Softball Field for the first time this season for a doubleheader against Coppin State. First pitch is set for noon on Wednesday, and both games will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
HOME SWEET HOME
GW returns to The Vern for the first time this season after playing its opening 13 games on the road. The GW Softball Field was a comfortable setting for last season's regular season championship team, who finished with a 13-3 mark at home.
The Colonials will play the next six games at home - three non-conference games followed by three conference games. After Wednesday's doubleheader against Coppin State, GW will have a week off before hosting Morgan State on Mar. 15. The Colonials will then kick off A-10 play on Mar. 18-19, when Rhode Island visits for a three-game series.Â
CORPUZ CONTINUES TO CRUSH
First-year Ashley Corpuz has been on an offensive tear of late. In GW's last five games, Corpuz is batting .357 with eight RBI, two doubles and two home runs -- both of which came in clutch spots.
Against Howard, Corpuz launched her first-career home run -- a two-run walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning. Then against Hampton, Corpuz delivered on a bases-loaded opportunity and hit a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the seventh inning.Â
On the season, Corpuz has team-highs in OPS (1.023), RBI (10), BB (7) and OBP (.410).
PARKER'S POP
Graduate student Mia Parker continues to show why she's one of the most dangerous hitters in the A-10. Parker is batting .306 on the season and is averaging .53 doubles per game -- the second-most in the conference and sixth-most in the NCAA.Â
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Coppin State is 2-2 this season after opening up the year last weekend at the DeMarini Tiger Clash. The Eagles lost twice to Bucknell but picked up wins over Bryant and Towson.
Brissa Alvarado is 6-11 to start the year and leads the Eagles at the plate, while Vanessa Carrizosa has the highest marks on the mound with two wins and a 2.50 ERA through two starts.
