Rose Cano is up to eight career wins
WASHINGTON - A brisk day on the Mount Vernon campus didn't freeze GW's batters as the Colonials plated 17 runs across two games and collected a pair of Wednesday afternoon victories over Coppin State.Â
GW 11, COPPIN STATE 0 (5 innings):
The Buff and Blue took an early lead in its first game back on the GW Softball Field. GW plated all 11 of its runs in the first three innings and left nothing up to doubt in Rose Cano's complete-game win.Â
Cano kept Coppin State quiet all afternoon. The first-year from Long Beach, Calif., continued her domination on the mound today allowing just three hits over the five innings and earned her second career shutout.Â
Cano earned the win with major help from her offense. The Buff and Blue jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning via runs scored by Arizona Ritchie and Ashley Corpuz and added another three runs to bolster the lead in the second inning.Â
GW continued its small-ball approach in the third inning and shot the lead up to 11. The inning was highlighted by a pair of two-RBI hits from Alena Ramirez and Corpuz.Â
Corpuz finished the game with four RBI after collecting a pair of two-RBI hits. Ritchie finished with the highest total runs scored with three, while Cano earned her seventh victory on the mound.
GW 6, COPPIN STATE 2
Game two of the day proved to be a tougher test for the Colonials, but with Cano back on the mound, GW managed to outpace Coppin State for a 6-2 victory.Â
The Eagles struck first with a double in the first inning, but GW responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. A Mia Parker double followed by an Abby Schaub single each drove a run in and put the Colonials back on top after the first inning.Â
The game remained quiet until the third inning, when Coppin found an equalizer thanks to an RBI single into center field. GW again responded and put up two more runs of its own and reclaimed the lead. Cano and Maggie Greco were credited with the third-inning RBIs.Â
GW found more run support in the fourth inning with two more runners crossing home plate, and with the lead now at four, the Buff and Blue held the Eagles quiet for the remainder of the game.
Emma Fales came in to pitch the final inning of the afternoon and earned the second save of her young career. Cano earned the win, which brings her win total up to eight this year.

GW will enjoy a week hiatus from competition before returning to the GW Softball Field on Wednesday, Mar. 15, for a 2 p.m. game against Morgan State.Â
