Softball Hosts Midweek Matchup vs. Morgan State, Begins A-10 Play with Weekend Series vs. Rhode Island

Colonials look to build on home success
WASHINGTON - A week after defending home turf in its home-opening doubleheader against Coppin State, GW softball returns to the GW Softball Field for four games this week. GW hosts Morgan State on Wednesday (2 p.m.) then begins conference play with a visit from Rhode Island on Saturday (12 p.m., 2 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.). All four games will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
CANO KEEPS WINNING
First-year pitcher Rose Cano has been dealing early in the season. Cano has quickly jumped out to eight wins (8-2), which ranks first in the A-10 and 16th nationally. She boasts a 2.64 ERA over 58.1 innings of work.
Cano is already tied for fifth on GW's all-time first-year pitcher wins list. The most wins ever recorded by a rookie pitcher at GW is 16, which was done by Sarah Costlow in 2015. With roughly two-thirds of the regular season still to play, Cano has the rookie pitching record in her sights.Â
ABOUT THE BEARS
Morgan State has started the year 9-10 after participating in five early-season tournaments. The Bears are coming off a 3-2 weekend after going 2-0 against Cornell, 0-2 against UMBC and picking up a win in one game against Merrimack College.
Nia Lewis and Victoria Fletcher rank atop Morgan State's batting charts. Lewis is batting .389 with three RBI and 16 total bases. Fletcher has a lower average at .320, but ranks first on the team with a 1.010 OPS, 15 RBI and 5 HR. Morgan State swept the most recent MEAC weekly awards, with Fletcher earning Player of the Week and Lewis earning Rookie of the Week.
Pitcher Anaya Hunte rounded out the MEAC weekly awards after earning Pitcher of the Week. She earned two complete-game wins against Cornell and has a 2.58 ERA on the season.
ABOUT THE RAMS
URI has had a rocky start to the season with an overall record of 3-14. The Rams' wins came against Georgia State, Army and Santa Clara.Â
Offensively, Skyler Rapuano has paced Rhode Island with .355 batting average and .896 OPS. Liz Lynchard is responsible for two of Rhode Island's wins this season and has a 4.93 ERA.Â
