Colonials shift attention to Wednesday’s home opener

NORFOLK, Va. - GW softball wrapped the Pirate-Spartan Classic having only played one of its four scheduled games, a 6-5 loss to Hampton. Friday's contest against Penn State was canceled due to inclement weather, while Saturday's games against Norfolk State and Delaware were ruled no contest due to field conditions.

Hampton 6, GW 5:
An Ashley Corpuz seventh-inning grand slam looked at the time to be a game-winner, but the Pirates of Hampton had other plans in mind and halted GW's comeback attempt with a 6-5 win in extra-innings.

Through five innings, nothing separated the two squads. Norfolk State scored one in the opening frame, but was then quieted until the sixth inning, and GW found an equalizer in the fourth inning thanks to an Abby Schaub RBI single.

Hampton pushed three more runs across in the sixth inning, leaving GW down three heading into the top of the seventh.

The Buff and Blue were able to rally and eventually loaded the bases for Corpuz, who already has a walk-off home run to her name in just the first month of her collegiate career. Corpuz, who brought plenty of power with her from her hometown of Ladera Ranch, Calif., crushed a grand slam to give GW a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Pirates fought back and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, and with the international tiebreaker in effect, would eventually go on to win the game in the bottom of the eighth.

GW will change gears, and this Wednesday will go from being guests at the ballpark to hosting as Coppin State makes a visit to DC for GW's home opener. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for noon, and both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
