Colonials post first winning regular season since 2016-17
WASHINGTON - Faced with the A-10 regular season champion and top-seed in next week's A-10 Championship in Brooklyn, GW men's basketball stood a chance to rise to as high as fifth in the conference. While George Washington hung around and battled foul trouble along with the Rams, only trailing by three at halftime, VCU pulled away in the second to win, 74-68.
Despite falling behind by as many as 17 with 7:21 on the clock, GW would not go down quietly. A furious comeback attempt, culminated with a 13-0 blitz, found the Buff and Blue trailing by three with less than a minute to go, but a VCU dunk restored a five-point cushion at 70-65 with 25.1 to play. After a pair of Rams' freebies made it 72-65, Brendan Adams buried a deep three with a hand in his face to draw within four. That was as close as the team would get in the eventual six-point setback.
Prior to tip-off, Buff & Blue honored its eight seniors, Adams, James Bishop IV, E.J. Clark, Hunter Dean, Amir Harris, Ricky Lindo Jr., Qwanzi Samuels and Theofanis Stamoulis, though Bishop, Dean, Harris and Samuels still have a remaining year of eligibility.
It was an encouraging regular season nonetheless in Foggy Bottom, with a 10-8 mark in conference play. An 11th win would have been the most since the 2015-16 NIT Championship team.
As he's done all season and throughout his three extraordinary years at GW, Bishop carried a heavy load. With his 14 points, Bishop officially became the first GW player to lead the A-10 in scoring since SirValiant Brown in 1999-00.
In his final home game of his collegiate career, Adams finished with 14 points, while Lindo wrapped his time in front of the Smith Center faithful with 12. Dean notched 14 points and eight rebounds in a continued stretch that's seen the big man from Louisiana play the best basketball of his career.
