Men’s Basketball Improves to 2-0 With 95-89 Win Against William & Mary
11/11/2023 4:19:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - A game after letting his teammates take the headlines, the James Bishop IV Player of the Year Campaign began in earnest, as last year's A-10 leading scorer went for a game-high 32 points, including 15-for-16 from the free throw line, in a 95-89 win against the visiting William & Mary Tribe.
Bishop, the fifth-year point guard from Baltimore, enjoyed a 32-5-5 performance, corralling a handful of rebounds while dishing out a team-high five dimes. Bishop was the head of the snake that attacked at will and was rewarded with 38 free throws tries, connecting at a 86.8% clip.
William & Mary came out firing, connecting on 8-of-21 three-point field goals in the first half, to build a 30-21 at its largest. The Tribe launched 44 threes in all, firing away early and often with even a hint of daylight. To GW's credit, the D was stingy inside the arc, limiting W&M to a .403 team field goal percentage, below its .409 mark from deep.
Maximus Edwards continued to make strides from last season's A-10 Rookie of the Year to this season's starring role. In his first double-double of the season, Edwards was one of four Revolutionaries in double figures in scoring (15) while ripping down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Bidding to become GW's second-straight top first-year player in the league, Garrett Johnson followed up his scintillating debut Monday with another 15 points and six rebounds, all after being away from competitive basketball for more than two years.
Another GDUB first-year, Darren Buchanan Jr., who came home in the offseason after shining locally at Jackson-Reed before sitting out last season at Virginia Tech, made the most of his 23:19 of court time, dropping 13 points on just five shots from the floor, while playing physically on defense. True first-year Jacoi Hutchinson was the answer to Buchanan's offensive prowess on the other end of the floor, leading all reserves with 25:56 of floor time and serving as a disruptive menace when the Tribe got going. GW notably brought three guys off the bench with either three or four years of eligibility remaining, while starting a pair in Johnson and true first-year Trey Autry, who are in their first season of college basketball.
A hallmark of the Chris Caputo era, when the offense flows fluidly, GW improved to 12-1 under the second-year bench boss when scoring 80+ points and 10-1 when making at least half of its field goal attempts.
The GW Revs will look to go 3-0 on their season-opening, four-game homestand when Hofstra comes to D.C. Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. tip live on ESPN+. George Washington will be looking for revenge after falling last season at Hofstra, despite Bishop going off for a career-high 44 points.
