Colonials return home Saturday vs. UMass on USA Network
RICHMOND, Va. - GW men's basketball held a two-point lead on the road against the reigning A-10 tournament champions on Wednesday night, but Richmond ratcheted up the defense in the second stanza to pull away for a 73-63 triumph.
The Colonials carried over their hot shooting from Saturday to start the night, knocking down 52% of their shots in the first 20 minutes, buoyed by James Bishop IV's scintillating offensive display. Coming off 40 points on Saturday, the reigning A-10 Player of the Week dropped 16 first-half points, knifing his way through numerous Richmond defenders to get solid looks right at the rim.
Neither team was able to create much separation in the first half with no lead larger than five in either direction, resulting in nine lead changes and eight ties. GW held a 39-37 lead at the break and led by three, 44-41, two minutes into the second half after a long ball from Ricky Lindo Jr.
Richmond responded, though, with a 7-0 run, holding the Colonials without a point for the next four minutes to take the lead for good. The Spiders then slowly extended the cushion and frustrated GW offensively the rest of the way, ultimately winning by 10, their largest margin of the day.
GW shot just 31% (10-of-32) in the second half and tied a season-low with 24 points after halftime. The Buff & Blue hit 41% overall, but were just 5-of-26 (19.2%) from beyond the arc.
Bishop finished with 25 points on 9-of-22 shooting, also adding five assists. Brendan Adams failed to reach double figures for the first time in 17 games dating back to last year after being limited to six points on 3-of-13 shooting, including 0-for-8 from deep.
Tyler Burton paced all scorers with 26 points for the Spiders, who shot 48% for the day and held a 21-8 edge in points scored at the free throw line.
After nearly a month away from the Smith Center, GW will return to the friendly confines at 22nd and G for four of its next five contests, starting on Saturday when the UMass Minutemen come to town. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. with coverage on USA Network.
